EVENT: New Pathways for Teachers in the Age of School Choice
While the percentage of undergraduate education majors has declined sharply since 1970 (from 21% of all undergraduate degrees conferred to 6.4% in 2024), the percentage of MA degrees has not declined as sharply, and the percentage of doctoral degrees awarded in education has actually risen. At the same time, interest other models for teacher preparation are growing, from alternative certification programs to apprenticeship to “grow-your-own” approaches.
This event will explore various ways that higher education and alternative providers are responding to the demand for teachers in a world of expanding student choice and institutional specialization—and how policy changes can enable these pathways to grow.
