Podcast: The Eroding Partnership Between Higher Ed and the Public

Holden Thorp and Buck Goldstein, who wrote Our Higher Calling: Rebuilding the Partnership Between America and Its Colleges and Universities, discuss the politicized and weak relationship between higher education and the public, as well as the the roles that trustees, faculty, alumni, and students play.

Thorp notes “the work that each side needs to do to understand the language of the other.”

“One of the things we have seen in response to the book is a lot of people who were opposed to tenure, you know trustees and alumni, we aren’t going to sell everybody but we have had people who have said ‘Okay I have read your chapter on tenure, and I understand why we have it and it makes sense.’ ”
